Positive Impacts of EB-5 Visa on the US Economy

by on April 13, 2018 in Funding Money News

The EB-5 Visa  (Employment-Based Fifth Preferences) program was launched in 1990. It’s a visa category that offers an opportunity to the foreign investors to become lawful permanent residents of US. The EB-5 visa has since had many positive impacts on the US economy.

Thus, the possible expansion of the EB-5 program will bring more direct foreign investment to the US which ultimately benefits the business community and the US economy. Here, we will discuss some of the positive impacts of EB-5 Visa category on the US Economy.

Eb-5 Visa Impacts Market Growth

EB-5 visa was a major source of project financing during the financial recession in 2008. These investments opportunities financed US businesses, majorly real estate developers in the time of crises.

According to American Statistics, the EB-5 investment program has generated $13 billion in foreign direct investment since 2008. The program also has added $9.62 billion to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It contributed $2 billion to the local state in the form of Federal and State taxes.

However, the EB-5 visa program is small as compared to other visa programs and increasingly challenging to obtain. In the year 2013, the US government has granted over 900,000 permanent resident visas to the foreign nationals, out of which the EB-5 visas were only 10,000.

Employment Opportunities

This specific visa program offers an opportunity to the foreign investors to become lawful  US permanent residents by investing their money in the US economy. This visa program requires the foreign investors to invest a minimum of $1.0 million in a project or $500,000 if the project is located in a “Targeted Employment Area (TEA)”. The project should have the potential to employ at least 10 American citizens.

The EB-5 investment visa program has annually created 29,300 jobs. Hence, played a key role in reducing the unemployment rate in the US. Thus, creating a tremendous amount of employment opportunities for American citizens.

The EB-5 program has proved to be successful to bring foreign direct investment into the country and creating jobs in abundance at no cost to the U.S. taxpayer.
